What kinds of Heat Therapy are available? How do they generate heat?

2025-11-24

Heat Therapy will promote blood circulation, dilate blood vessels, increase the oxygen content in tissues, thereby stimulating metabolism and helping muscles relaxation. ;
There are many ways of heat therapy, for example, hot baths, self heating patch and electric heating, etc. Their actual effects and duration are quiet different.
For those person who need long-term relief from back pain and neck tension, it is important to understand the different types of heat therapy and their heating principles, so as to avoid misunderstandings and make accurate product choices.

At present, the common types of heat packs available on the market can be classified into two categories, each with its own unique heating method and characteristics:

  1. Capsaicin Heat Plasters: Simulating Warmth Through "Stimulation"

The core ingredient of this type of heat plaster, "capsaicin," is a natural pepper extract derived from chili peppers. Instead of generating heat actively, it works by using the mild stimulation of capsaicin on the skin to promote the dilation of local blood vessels. Eventually, it creates a warm sensation on the skin surface to achieve a soothing effect.

It should be noted that capsaicin can cause irritation to the skin, especially for those with sensitive skin or a history of allergies - this type of ointment usually contains lanolin, which may act as an allergen.

  1. Activated Self Adhesive Heat Patch: Releasing Sustained Heat via "Chemical Reaction"

Different from capsaicin heat plasters, activated Heat Patch generate heat actively through chemical reactions, and they are also one of the most widely used types currently. The main ingredients of thedisposable heat patch are activated carbon, iron, water and vermiculite. Before opening the package, the patch is sealed and do not contact with the air, so no reaction occurs. Once open the package, the iron powder contact with oxygen, causing the "iron oxidation" reaction and releasing heat.

Generally, the temperature will gradually rise within 30 minutes after activation. The heating lasts for 8-12 hours, suitable for various scenarios that require continuous warmth.

No matter which type of heat therapy you choose, the most important thing is to select the one that suits you best.
